Steppe land of Castro Verde and Mértola (Full day)

The undulating plain of steppe land, flowering meadows and cereal fields with scattered Holm-Oaks around the pitoresque town of Castro Verde offers one of the best steppe-birding in western Europe. Both, Great- and Little Bustards occur in good numbers. Breeding birds here include Montagu's Harrier, Lesser Kestrel, European Roller, Collared Pratincole and Western Black-eared Wheatear. Thekla- and Calandra Lark, as well as Black-bellied Sandgrouse are also typical. From spring onwards, Griffon- and also Eurasian Black Vultures are scanning the open landscape for carcasses. Other large raptors in the area that we might come across may include Bonelli's Eagle, Golden Eagle and even the elusive and highly endangered Spanish Imperial Eagle. All days are amaizing in this region!
