Alte: a village of culture and craft traditions
Alte is a small village nestled between four hills and crossed by a stream. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in the Algarve and still retains its white houses with flowering plants arranged in narrow cobbled streets, in the style of southern Portugal.
Its fertile soil, abundant water and Mediterranean climate have fuelled an essentially agricultural economy that has moulded unique features into its popular culture.
In this area, many ancestral practices linked to the rural world are still maintained, particularly in handicrafts, such as esparto work. But other artists and craftspeople have flourished in this environment, and music, theatre and art are marked in this village's identity.
On this 3-hour tour, we'll explore the most picturesque places in the village and meet artisans who have dedicated decades to transforming natural raw materials into artistic and utilitarian pieces.
