Coastal Lagoons (half-day)

Vilamoura, just east of Albufeira, has the biggest reed beds in the Algarve. Two observatories in the area might allow us to observe species like Purple Heron, possibly also Black-crowned Night-Heron and maybe Squacco Heron. The Ferruginous Duck, a highly endangered Duck-species occurs here, as well as Great Red Warbler, Purple Swamphen, Cetti's Warbler, Kingfisher and the “Exotic” Black-headed Weaver. Marsh Harrier and Purple Heron breeds. Wintering birds includes Penduline Tit, Black-winged Kite and Booted Eagle. A sewerage-work in the area attracts large numbers of Gulls, but also Ducks and Grebes. Nearby, a coastal lagoon, called Foz do Almargem, allows good records of Red-crested Pochard, in winter, and some forest birds, since the place is surrounded by a dense pine tree area.
