Rocha da Pena

Rocha da Pena, part of the Local Protected Landscape created by Decree-Law 142/2008 of 24 July, covers an area of 637ha in the transition between the Barrocal and the Serra Algarvia.

This site is a magnificent geological monument of great natural and landscape interest.

Geologically, Rocha da Pena is a steep limestone cornice whose plateau is approximately 2 kilometres long and has an escarpment about 50 metres high. The maximum altitude is 479 metres.

The great diversity of flora is one of the site's greatest assets, with more than 500 recorded species, some of which are endemic, such as the Narcissus Calcicola or the Dwarf Palm. It is also home to the rare Bonelli's Eagle and several species of bat.
