Reserva Natural de Castro Marim

The Castro Marim Salt Marsh Nature Reserve, located in the eastern Algarve near the mouth of the Guadiana River, occupies an area of approximately 2,000ha, made up mainly of salt marshes and agricultural areas.

Extensive salt marshes, salt pans - traditional and industrial - canals and cisterns that ensure drainage and connection to the tides, are a special part of the landscape in this area. Together with the rural areas, they are also important habitats for birds, making this reserve one of the most important in Portugal.

It is listed on the Natura Network as a Site of Interest for Conservation and a Special Protection Area for Birds.
